Sometimes being an adult is awesome, like when you can have cake and wine for dinner followed by pizza and beer for dessert (not that I've ever done that...). But then there are those times when being an adult isn't all it's cracked up to be, like when you realize that all the cool things are made for children. That's when it's time to let your inner child call the shots and be the big kid that we all have lurking just behind the parts of our brain reserved for doing grown-up things like paying bills and not throwing temper tantrums. And my big kid is over the moon for BigStuffed.
BigStuffed creates oversized stuffed sea creatures, including an octopus, a sperm whale, a humpback whale, a starfish, a crab, a sting ray, and a sardine (a sardine!). Each character in the BigStuffed cast is designed and handmade by Dana Muskat, who lives and works in Paris. After stints with big fashion houses like Lanvin and Giambattista Vali, Dana decided to leave the fashion world behind and set out to build something of her own using the best tools she had - her hands. What she would make, exactly, was yet to be determined.
It wasn't until Dana made a three-foot long stuffed octopus for her newborn niece that BigStuffed came to be. Her tentacled gift was such a huge hit that Dana began receiving requests from family and friends, and then their families and friends, and so on. What began as a heartfelt gesture quickly turned into a thriving small business.
Dana's designs are inspired by the shapes, colors, and textures of real animals, which she simplifies and then crafts into the perfect size for optimal full-body hugging and snuggling. Made with natural cotton and wool fabrics in a soft pastel palette (with the occasional bright accent) and finished with BigStuffed's hallmark droopy eyes, each sea animal has the distinct one-of-a-kind feel that only comes from being cut, sewn, and stuffed by hand.
Which of these adorable, oversized, droopy-eyed, stuffed sea creatures catches your inner child's fancy? I think I just may need one of each...
